Safety & Compliance — Certifications and Regulatory Standing

Safety & Compliance

Your Safety and Peace of Mind is Our Highest Priority

At Sumba Retreats, we understand that true luxury is impossible without an unwavering commitment to safety, security, and operational integrity. We operate in a remote and beautiful part of the world, which makes rigorous adherence to international safety standards and Indonesian regulations not just a legal requirement, but a moral imperative. Our clients trust us with their most valuable asset—their well-being. This page outlines the robust framework of compliance and safety protocols that underpins every journey we design.

Corporate & Legal Compliance

We operate with full transparency and in strict accordance with the laws of the Republic of Indonesia.

  • Legal Entity: Sumba Retreats is a premier brand operated by PT Juara Wisata Dunia, a legally registered Indonesian Limited Liability Company (Perseroan Terbatas) based in Jakarta and with operational offices in Bali and Sumba.
  • Tourism Business License (TDUP): We hold a valid Tanda Daftar Usaha Pariwisata (Tourism Business Registration Certificate), issued by the relevant government authority and compliant with the regulations set by the Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif (Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy).
  • Tax Compliance (NPWP): Our company is a registered taxpayer with a valid Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak (Taxpayer Identification Number) and is fully compliant with all Indonesian tax regulations.
  • Industry Association Membership: We are an active member of the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA), adhering to their professional code of ethics and standards.

Guest, Staff, and Partner Welfare

Our duty of care extends to everyone involved in our operations.

  • Comprehensive Insurance: We carry comprehensive public liability insurance that covers all aspects of our operations. We also ensure all our primary partners have their own sufficient insurance coverage.
  • Staff Welfare: All our employees are registered under Indonesia’s national social security programs, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (covering work-related accidents, retirement, and life insurance) and BPJS Kesehatan (providing comprehensive health coverage).
  • Partner Vetting for Safety: A critical part of our partner audit involves verifying their safety and hygiene certifications. We prioritize partners who hold the CHSE (Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environment Sustainability) certification from the Ministry of Tourism.

Operational Safety Standards

From the moment you land to the moment you depart, your safety is managed by strict, documented protocols.

  • Transportation Safety: Our entire fleet of 4×4 vehicles undergoes regular, documented maintenance by certified mechanics. All vehicles are equipped with first-aid kits, communication devices, and GPS tracking. Our drivers are professionally licensed, have passed defensive driving courses, and are trained in basic first aid.
  • Activity Safety: All adventure activities are subject to rigorous risk assessments. Our surf guides are certified by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and are trained in surf rescue and first aid. All equipment, from surfboards to trekking gear, is maintained to the highest standards.
  • Emergency Response Protocol (ERP): We have a comprehensive ERP for medical emergencies, natural disasters, or security incidents. This includes 24/7 on-call management, established communication channels, and standing agreements with the best available medical clinics on the island and medical evacuation services for transfer to international-standard hospitals in Bali or beyond.

Aviation & Regulatory Coordination

We ensure all air travel is managed professionally and safely.

  • Aviation Partners: We work exclusively with reputable airlines like Garuda Indonesia and IATA-accredited ticketing partners. We constantly monitor flight information and advisories from authorities like AirNav Indonesia to manage any potential disruptions.
